Having begun to make my way through Becoming Jane...

I think James McAvoy would make a perfect Strange.

Yup I agree, I think the JS&MN movie could do with some McAvoy.

A good choice. I'm also very impressed by Benedict Cumberbatch. He isn't as good looking as many obvious choices but he's a very good actor.

I'm getting to the stage where I really don't care who plays Jonathan, as long as they get the movie done soon! :P

But seriously, I'd love to see James McAvoy in the movie (because I just love seeing James McAvoy :P ), but he doesn't fit my idea of Strange. Maybe James could play Mr Segundus? :D As for Strange, I still think either Jack Davenport or Matthew Macfayden (or possibly Simon Woods) would be perfect.

Not as familiar with the other actors you named there. But the thing that cinched it for me was the nose. The woodcuts of strange in the book were of a man with quite the impressive proboscis. And McAvoy's got one as well. And his demeanor in Becoming Jane, quite Strangesque.

Just did a google image...those are ALL good calls, except I'd love to see Simon Woods as perhaps Segundus.

I like the idea of Simon Woods myself. He plays Mr. Bingley in the 2005 P&P, and I think he plays Augustus Caesar in Rome? Not entirely sure, but he's great. I also wouldn't mind Paul Bettany, even if he's a bit too old.

Someone above said McAvoy would make a good Segundus, and I agree for the most part. But at the same time I think big name actors may be a bit distracting... I suppose we'll have to see.

I think Bettany would be an amazing Man with the Thistledown Hair. That sense of menace you get from him in a lot of his roles would suit.

I know what you mean with the big name actors, but this is a fun game to play.

I agree about Simon Woods. He just looks like Strange to me. And I do like the idea of McAvoy in a smaller role.

Jonathan Pryce would be a great Norrell. (Yes, I did love him in POTC.)

Mmm, I'm still stuck on Ian Holm, to be honest. When I read (actually heard) JSMN for the first time, he was instantly the guy who popped into my head. Pryce is generally too confident and...big, for lack of a better term than I thought Norrell was.

Here's a better question: Who's John Childermass, in your head?

(Cool, he just radiated that....strangeness.)

C'mon! play my game! Childermass, GO!

I was thinking Terry Gilliam.

Tim Roth? I've only seen him in R&G but I've heard about other films he's been in.

Again, haven't seen him in much. He's rather squishy in R&G and in HP.

(Oh, this is soooo much fun. I love dream-casting shows and films. I do this for all my school's plays, too. :D)

What about the ladies, then? (Do not let Ms. Knightley anywhere near it, plz.)

Could you see Christina Ricci as Lady Pole?

I used to like her, but I saw Atonement a couple of months ago and realized she's exactly the same in every role she plays. Cecilia Tallis and Elizabeth Swann are way different people, but she plays them exactly the same. (Given the limits of the script - obviously Cee doesn't swing from ropes and what.)

I have...never actually seen her in anything, so I don't know. O.o

Mm, that would work.

I also think Alan Rickman has to be in this movie somewhere.

See my other comment re: lascelles. The fellow who played what's his face in becoming jane, the one who wrote the letter...he's feckless enough to be a decent Drawlight.

I cannot visualize him, but I know who you mean. Paul Bettany would be a good Lascelles too, or Thistle-down - he's best when he's a bit unhinged. Rufus Sewell would also be interesting as T-D.

Pryce could be Sir Walter? Or, ooh, George III.

...also, the film needs Sean Bean in some capacity, if only because of Sharpe.

I don't have anyone in mind for Drawlight - when I read, see, I don't visualize it in my head unless it's something super-technical where I make an effort to, so I have to really try to think about this.

I have the audiobook here (it's how I first experienced JSMN, desk job with a cd player) and the voices really inform the characters for me.

Or a younger Alan as Lascelles. Although I see Paul Bettany as Lascelles in my head.
